Kenwood kindergartners participate in two residencies a year and one author's visit.
Barn Dance
In the fall, students throughout Kenwood participate in an American folk dance residency. For one week, students work with Bob Walser and Julie Young-Walser, former Kenwood parents, as they learn to execute various traditional folk dances. It culminates with an all-school Fall Family Festival. DUE to DISTANCE LEARNING, there will no be a Fall Family Festival.
African Music and Dance
In January we begin our African drumming, singing, and dance residency. Brother Ghana M’Baye, is our teacher. In six weeks, he teaches the kindergartners a drumming rhythm, classroom song, and a classroom dance. In addition, all the kindergartners learn a grade-level dance and song. It culminates in a rousing performance for our family and friends on NAAPID (National African American Parent Involvement Day). We hope to do an online version.
A Visit with Nancy Carlson
Nancy Carlson, local children's book author, visits to tell us about being an author, where she gets her story ideas, and doodling. We are hoping to do an online visit this year.
All of our residencies are paid for via PTA grants. We are so grateful for the generosity of our Kenwood community and its support of the arts at all grade levels.
