Dear Kenwood Families,
I hope this letter finds you well. It’s my great pleasure to introduce myself to you. My name is Heidi Johnson, and I am thrilled to be Kenwood Community School’s Principal.
My impressions of Kenwood were set in the fall of 2017, when I first visited Kenwood classrooms. In the art room, I admired the fifth graders’ beautiful ink and water color paintings of native fish species from Red Lake. Next door, students were strumming nearly perfect chords on their guitars while singing “This Little Light of Mine,” their hearts wide open. Upstairs, a younger student was contemplating the death of his mealworm while writing in his science journal. I also noticed the Maud Hart Lovelace book selections displayed in the media center and was touched by a staff member’s impulse to share the stories behind the art on the walls. I could feel the school community’s commitment to nurturing intellect and creativity, Smarts and Arts. It’s clear that your hopes and dreams for children reside at the heart of this very special school.
As you get to know me, you’ll learn that I’ve worked in schools in the United States, Hungary, and China to ensure that every child realizes their fullest potential in an academically rigorous and joyful learning community. I believe that when the school, families, and community partners team together to spark children's curiosity and creativity, they grow up to become global citizens who participate and lead with responsibility, compassion, and innovation.
As we travel this journey together, please know that I’ve begun my principalship at Kenwood with deep respect for all that you’ve created and a commitment to leading with humility, kindness, and transparency, for the benefit of all children. I’m grateful for this opportunity to work with you in this beautiful school community.
