Welcome to Kindergarten!
Welcome to Kenwood Kindergarten, where children embark on a life-long journey of learning. This is where they will expand their world with new teachers, friends, and experiences as they participate in an exciting year of growth in a safe and nurturing environment. Research tells us that kindergartners are kinesthetic learners. With that in mind, the children are exposed to many hands-on activities that will make their learning meaningful to them. They also learn to work and play independently and in small and large groups. We focus on learning how to listen, take turns, play fair, and be kind to each other. The district kindergarten expectations include beginning reading skills - letter names and sounds, sight words, comprehension and reading strategies; handwriting skills - printing letters and numbers; beginning concepts of math – numbers, counting, basic addition and subtraction, measure, shapes, and patterns; social studies concepts of getting along in a diverse world; and basic science skills of questioning, experimenting, observing, comparing, and classifying. We know that parents/guardians are the first and most important teachers in a child’s life, and we encourage you to participate in our classroom activities. During the year there will be many opportunities for families to volunteer. Working together as a home/school team, we know your child’s kindergarten adventure will be very rewarding. We invite you to come and visit our school.
